1. What are ultra-capacitors?

         An ultra-capacitor, also known as a super-capacitor, or electrochemical capacitor, is a device for storing electrical energy which is growing rapidly in popularity. The design and mechanism of operation is somewhere between an ordinary capacitor and a battery, which opens up some interesting and valuable applications.

2. What is the difference between capacitor and super-capacitors?

         super-capacitor differs from an ordinary capacitor in two important ways: its plates effectively have a much bigger area and the distance between them is much smaller, because the separator between them works in a different way to a conventional dielectric, hence it holds much more capacitance.

         Imagine electricity is water for a moment: where an ordinary capacitor is like a cloth that can mop up only a tiny little spill, a super-capacitor’s porous plates make it more like a chunky sponge that can soak up many times more.

3. What are some advantages of ultra-capacitors over other energy storage and power delivery devices, such as lead-acid batteries?

         In addition to safe and reliable operation, ultra-capacitors charge and discharge in as little as fractions of a second, and they can perform normally over a broad operating temperature range (-40 to +65 degrees C) and have an operation lifetime of 1 million or more charge/discharge cycles.

4. What is the Guangxi Aerospace Beidou super-capacitors primary advantage over its competitors?

          There are a few primary advantages. 

          First, our unique blend of mixed-metal oxide electrode material is intrinsic with higher energy density than our competitors carbon material.

          Second, our charging mechanism is both physical (EDLC) and chemical (REDOX), compared our competitors EDLC.

          Third, we have a much higher voltage window, a single component cell  between 1-24V against our competitors 2.5-2.7V.

          Fourth, our stacking structure can offer scalable flexible working voltage. Both sides of the Farad super-capacitor’s electrode can be used to form flexible voltages by stacking up electrodes.

          Fifth, Our capacitors are fabricated with technologies that can yield High Mechanical Endurance (>50Kg), High Roughness Factor (>10^4), and Corrosion Resistance,which translates to Longer life span (up to 3 Millions cycles) against our competitors 1 million cycles.

          Sixth, our unique patented planar structure enables us to design ultra-capacitors with the thickness at 0.25mm (from 3-12V) only. It is thin enough to be encapsulated in a smart card as a power source; or to be incorporated with a smart phone battery to upgrade it into a high-power battery capable of delivering 10 amps instant current.

5.  What will be your other product roll out in the first year of production?

          Another application would be the Car Booster application.  This device connects to the battery terminals in the car, and provide various benefits to the car owner.  Among them, significant fuel savings between 5-25%, reduced harmful carbon emissions, increase in torque performance, and longer battery life from voltage regulation. All these have been tested exhaustively across many difference cars and large vehicles.  This unique device can be applied against all types of cars, trucks and buses, whether it is petrol based, Hybrid or Electric Vehicles.  Especially in China, with the rising concerns of high petrol prices and smoke emissions, we are sure this will be a welcomed product and embraced by all parties including the government. The end user can recoup their savings on this devise in as little as 4 months. 

6. Can Guangxi Aerospace Beidou ultra-capacitors play a significant role in the future of energy storage?

          Guangxi Aerospace Beidou Ultra-capacitors’ possess high power density, extremely long operational life and reliable performance in extreme temperatures give system designers the ability to better satisfy the power requirements of a wide range of demanding applications. With millions of cells and multi-cell modules already powering applications in cars, public transit and other heavy vehicles, wind energy and other industrial applications, ultra-capacitors can be expected to play an even more prominent role in the years ahead and we intend to be in the thick of things.

          Experts have predicted that the global ultra-capacitor market is expected to reach USD 8 billion by 2024, increasing to almost USD 10 billion by 2025.

8. Can you share some background on the patents related to the Guangxi Aerospace Beidou ultra-capacitor?

       Our patents were acquired from the research work done by a group of scientists led by Dr KC Tsai, an American who had dedicated his life doing research in the area of Super-capacitors.  Dr Tsai had been working with many prominent research institutions such as Pinnacle Research Institute, Lawrence Livermore & Lawrence Berkley, DARPA, Philip Morris, Eli Lily, among others.

          We have 8 American patents, 15 Taiwanese patents and 4 patents from China, all related to the material and methodology of constructing the Super-capacitors.  We are convinced we are very much ahead against our competitors in this technology.
